What is neurological physiotherapy?
Neurological Physiotherapy is a specialist strand of Physiotherapy that works with people who experienced trauma or who have had disease to their brain, spinal cord or nerves. This neurological damage can cause symptoms such as weakness, lack of coordination, reduced sensation as well as a reduced control in their movements.
Your brain can 're-learn' impaired movement patterns; functional tasks can consolidate these patterns of movement, which can be reinforced to form more permanent connections in the brain via repetition. Priming of the brain to learn has been recently researched, priming means preparing the brain to learn, but, the task has to be part of our consciousness. You need an ‘enriched environment’ to generate plasticity. It’s not just a matter of 100 hours. The patient has to attend to what he or she is learning. You are teaching the brain – not a muscle. With our expertise, guidance and practice, we can provide you with the support you need to get moving more to allow the brain to learn.
Healthy parts of the brain can compensate for damaged areas of the brain by re-organising and forming connections; these connections need to be stimulated by meaningful activity. What we have learnt from research into therapies to speed recovery from stroke, is that patterns of neuroplasticity is highly variable between individuals recovering from any insult to the central nervous system. Therefore comparing between interventions and studies is difficult and therefore it is difficult to develop a drug or intervention that will enhance this in everybody. At Neuro Physio Pro we aim to deliver a bespoke individualised rehabilitation program to best meet your needs and maximise neuro-plasticity.
